Dental and Periodontal Examination
A full mouth assessment is performed during all cleanings to check for possible decay, oral cancer, and other diseases of the oral cavity.
A periodontal examination and probing are used to assess the health of your gums and teeth. It can help diagnose the gum diseases gingivitis and periodontitis. It also can reveal receding gums, exposed roots, tooth grinding (bruxism) and other problems. The exam and probing include taking measurements of the spaces between your teeth and gums. If your hygienist has concerns about your gum health, you may be referred to a periodontist, a gum-disease specialist.
Most cavities are discovered in the early stages during a routine exam. The surface of the tooth may be soft when probed with a sharp instrument. Pain may not be present until the advanced stages of tooth decay. During all cleaning appointments, teeth are examined for possible decay, fractures and wear.
Routine examination of the teeth by a dentist is recommended every year, this may include dental X-rays.
Professional Teeth Cleaning
In the past, oral health has been associated only with the mouth. New research has found that the advanced stage of gum disease, periodontitis, is linked with health problems such as heart disease and stroke. Some researchers have even suggested that periodontitis it is can cause premature birth, low birth weight, pancreatic cancer, high blood sugar levels and even bacterial pneumonia.
As many as 75% of adults over the age of 30 may suffer from some stage of gum disease according to the American Journal of Periodontology . Regular dental cleanings and exams can prevent these problems as well as provide you with good oral hygiene. Teeth cleaning is a part of oral hygiene and involves the removal of dental plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities (dental caries), gingivitis, and periodontal disease. People routinely clean their own teeth by brushing and flossing. Dental hygienists can remove the hardened deposits (tartar) that cannot be removed by routine cleaning.
It is recommended having teeth professionally cleaned every six months. More frequent cleaning may be recommended depending on your oral hygiene needs.
Coffee, tea, tobacco and poor hygiene can cause surface stains on the enamel. Dental Hygienist can remove these stains with simple polishing. The polishing paste is fluoridated pumice applied to the teeth with a non-latex rubber polishing cup.
Pediatric Dental Hygiene Care
Children should begin seeing a Dentist or Dental Hygienist at the age of three. We will assess tooth eruption, adequate spacing, jaw alignment, possible oral habits (thumb sucking, tongue thrust, mouth breathing, clenching or grinding of teeth) and baby bottle caries. All findings will be recorded and discussed with the parent/s. Referrals will be given accordingly.
Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens the enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. Studies show that fluoride reduces cavities in people of all ages and is effective and safe when used correctly. Fluoride application is a selective treatment and is not recommended for everyone.
Sports GuardsSports-related oral injuries are prevented by the use of mouth guards. Mouth guards, much like air bags, cushion the force of a blow to the jaw and dissipate the energy, greatly decreasing the incidence and severity of concussions because the lower jaw (the mandible), is not forced back into the base of the skull (the TMJ), and harmful forces are not transmitted to the brain. In addition, the teeth and soft tissues of the mouth are protected because the upper and lower jaws are not brought forcefully together, and the front teeth are cushioned. Costs related to replacing teeth lost due to trauma can run into the thousands and can lead to a lifetime of dental problems.
Custom mouth guards are not just worn in hockey; sports such as field hockey, football, boxing, martial arts, soccer, softball, rugby, lacrosse, skateboarding are some contact and non-contact sports that could cause an injury.
Custom made mouth guards offer protection from injury, a comfortable fit that stays in place, improvement of speech, and greater oxygen flow that will improve breathing.
JW Dental Hygiene will take an impression of your upper teeth and a custom fitted ProForm mouth guard (used by most NHL hockey players) is made on the premises.
Oral Cancer Screening
In Canada, oral cancer is the 13th most common cancer; ranking 6th worldwide. Early diagnosis of oral cancer through screening and early detection is critical. The 5-year survival for tongue cancer is 71% for stage 1 disease and 37% for late stage disease. When you have your dental cleaning, your dental hygienist is also screening you for oral cancer.
Teeth whitening is very popular amongst our “health conscious” and “anti-aging” society. Studies show that this isn’t going to change. Teeth whitening services are growing in popularity, and it’s one of our most requested services.
Most whitening products are peroxide-based and are actually capable of altering the colour of the tooth itself without damaging its structure. The peroxide ingredient is what actually whitens the enamel and makes your teeth whiter. The strength of the whitening treatment typically depends on the strength of the peroxide contained in the whitening product.
If you are considering teeth whitening, be sure to review the facts about teeth whitening with a dental professional first. Only a dental professional can tell you if your teeth and gums are healthy enough to go through a whitening process.
Teeth Whitening Options at JW Dental Hygiene
In-office teeth whitening offers excellent results. The procedure is very simple. Peroxide gel is put into a mouth tray or applied directly to the teeth using a brush. A blue cold light lamp is placed directly in front of the exposed teeth and run for 15-20 minutes. A single treatment can show an improvement of 2-7 shades, up to 3 treatments can be done during one session.
Teeth whitening trays and gels are very effective, but the desired results take longer to achieve. These clear trays are usually worn during the day or overnight and can take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks before results are achieved.
